ABSTRACT

Inequalities and exclusion from education were exposed and worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic;however, it forced us to recognize the need to make equality, equity, and social inclusion policies effective for all. Scientific and technological solutions to global threats depend on the formation of the maximum number of qualified human resources, which entirely relies on enabling everyone to acquire, update, and improve their knowledge, skills, and competencies through lifelong learning and higher education. To guarantee inclusive and quality education for all (UN Sustainable Development Goal 4) is hard to achieve at higher education or post-secondary levels. This research aims to provide an overview of the achievements and challenges that higher education institutions (HEI) face in fulfilling the requirements of students with disabilities (SWD). We analyzed a database of 104 s from reviews of SWD in HEI published in Scopus-indexed journals between 2018 and August 2022. After data preprocessing, the text mining analysis on the corpus was visualized in word clouds and graphs. From the results, we could identify that providing access to facilities and information still dominates the research on inclusive education, and visual disability is the most frequently analyzed. The graphs reveal published research on undergraduates with disorders like Autism Spectrum (ASD), learning disorders, and visual, hearing, physical, intellectual, and psychosocial disabilities. The authors also evidenced the lack of information on the barriers and needs of SWD in HEI and potential future research to address them. Concerning the strategies to attend and care for SWD inside the classrooms, the graphs highlight Universal Design as a promising trend leading to inclusivity in higher education. The results and analyses in current research provide essential information to educational stakeholders and decision-makers inside institutions so that they can take action to embrace diversity. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Changes in everyday activities, such as adapting to the new online format due to lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic and being far away from family and friends, greatly influenced the emotions and feelings of students and their parents. Assessing the emotions of students' parents at the higher education level is necessary since their emotional well-being has a direct impact on the emotional well-being of students throughout their distant learning experience. In this article, we held a quantitative study over 8 subsequent weeks from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in students and parents from the Mexican institution Tecnologico de Monterrey. Using a questionnaire from Inteligencia Audiencias (Intelligence Hearings), students and their parents could register their feelings and their valence from April 13th to July 20th, 2020. The results indicate that the most predominant emotions in both groups were very unpleasant and unpleasant in nature, being "worried"and "tired"the most common ones. The current study also provides some approaches for addressing the negative repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 outbreak forced education into a distance modality. Professors and educators suddenly confronted unexpected challenges, including a lack of technical skills to implement efficient pedagogies in this modality. One rescuing element was social media, increasingly used inside organizations. It allows users to create content and provide valuable information on human interactions and collective behavior, mainly textual data. The objective of the current research was to identify professorial concerns after the shift to distance education and the first 15 months of confinements. Specifically, we analyzed the comments expressed in the social networks by more than 5,700 faculty members of a Mexican private university that implemented online teaching. Applying Educational Data Mining to 680 remarks retrieved from the social network, we used Voyant Tools and R programming for text and sentiment analysis. The results evidenced that the professors created a kind social network, sharing tips and digital media as educational resources, which led to a natural learning curve for developing online teaching competencies. Other relevant findings included the need to provide the professors continuous training in communication and learning management platforms to engage in ongoing discussions on topics, such as whether turning on the cameras should be compulsory during online lectures. This work's results have value to higher education institutions and professors seeking a better understanding of their requirements and decision-making to improve education delivery under current and future constraints.

ABSTRACT

The mandatory implementation of online education due to the COVID-19 outbreak has drawn research about this modality - analyzing students' perspectives about course designs, the instructors' performance, and the institution's services. In contrast, little is known about what an undergraduate should do to perform well academically, a factor that can even impact the retention of students who face this modality for the first time, according to self-determination theory and student-centered learning. This work was guided by the question: What are the effective strategies for excellent school performance in online education according to the undergraduates themselves? We performed qualitative data analysis of thirty-four letters written by second-year engineering students, with one semester of experience in online education at a private university in Mexico using an educational data mining methodology. The qualitative analysis used text and sentiment analysis tools. The texts contained academic and wellness recommendations for other learners who would start their education in this modality. The research showed that, in addition to the actions generally valid for academic success in face-to-face courses, participants advised the relevance of taking notes, leveraging digital tools, and defining a specific study space at home when learning in the online modality. In terms of wellness, participants recommended looking at the positive side of things, having a good diet, sleeping well, and resting from the computer. Higher education is a complex system in which different stakeholders participate;however, beyond excellent content, professors, technologies, and learning platforms, students consolidate learning through their actions.

ABSTRACT

Establishing a context for the application of knowledge, developing their sense of belonging, and using materials that play a social role in their lives engage undergraduates and makes them core of their own learning. However, this is complicated to achieve in courses without laboratories or under restrictions due to COVID-19 pandemic. Current work reports the implementation and impact of EDU Movies, a student-centered learning asynchronous activity to generate learning scenarios using fiction movies. It was carried out in the Ecological Processes for Human Development online course with 57 undergraduates (29 females and 28 males) enrolled in different programs. EDU Movies addressed the topics of environment, sustainable development and ethics and citizenship. To measure the impact, the participants perceptions were gathered using a survey and their answers were analyzed using statistics and text analysis. The evidence shows that over 69% of the students perceived that the movies were a great aid for learning the topics, particularly for female undergraduates. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The use of the virtual environment, within the framework of university education, has become more than a work tool, it has become a necessity, as a resilient response to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ecuador does not escape this reality and within it, its universities, so it is always relevant to study its operation, therefore, the objective of the research is proposed as a diagnosis of the use of the virtual learning environment in the teaching-learning process at UNIANDES Puyo. In order to fulfill the proposed objective, several methods were used, among which are of the theoretical order, the synthetic analytical, the deductive inductive and the historical-logical. And of the empirical order, observation, surveys, interviews, the general problem-solving method and DEMATEL. With the application of these methods, the perception of students and teachers in relation to the use of the virtual learning environment, the factors that limit its use and with the classification and hierarchy of these, the actions to mitigate their effects were known.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: There are successful reports of the use of telemedicine in nephrology (TN), which would facilitate the access of patients with chronic kidney diseases (CKD) from the primary health centers (PHCs) to the nephrologist. Since 2019, TN has been implemented in Chile as a public health policy with national coverage. The process and outcome indicators associated with the Chilean National TN Program among PHCs and reference nephrologists are described. Methods: Descriptive study of asynchronous telemedicine care performed from urban and rural PHCs (574) (municipal health centers) to 17 nephrologists from Hospital Digital, between January 01, 2019 and June 30, 2021. The percentage of the rural population in Chile is 12.1%. Teleconsultations are sent by the PHCs doctor through a digital platform that contains clinical information, laboratory tests and treatments. The nephrologist in a deferred time, responds in the same way and decides between the options: 1) Counter-refer the patient to PHCs requesting more information or with treatment recommendations;2) Refer to a hospital for more complex studies or treatments. The following were analyzed: 1. Distribution by age, sex and comorbidities;2. Response times;3. Prevalence of CKD by stages;4. Destination post evaluation TN;5. Level of relevance of PHCs consultations. Results: In total, 12.705 asynchronous telemedicine visits were performed (2019: 50.8 %;2020: 31.9 %;2021:17.3%. During the Covid-19 pandemic, attention for TN was maintained although restricted by the health crisis in the public health network. The mean age was 65.9 (SD: 13.2) years;80% were older than 60 years;57%% women. CKD stages: S1 (8.5%%);S2 (16.2%);S3 (53.6%);S4 (17.9%) and S5 (3.7%). Comorbidities: diabetes 56%, hypertension 90.7%, dyslipidemia 65%, overweight 29.2% and obesity 38.7%. The average response time was 91 hrs. (range 1- 173). In total, 7.954 patients (62.6%) were referred to PHCs with recommendations, without requiring transfers to another center. In turn, 4.751 patients (37.4%) required face-to-face nephrological evaluation (58.1% high priority for CKD in stages 4-5). The relevance of the consultations according to the nephrologist's evaluation was considered high 23.1% and median 49.3%. Conclusions: The implementation of TN as a public policy has made it possible to facilitate expeditious access, evaluation and timely treatment of patients with CKD from urban and rural PHCs and prioritize face-to-face care by a nephrologist for those with greater risk or severity. Most of the patients evaluated (62.8%) were referred to PHCs, optimizing the limited space and high demand of face-to-face care per specialist. During the Covid-19 pandemic period, the use of TN was restricted but allowed continuity of control of patients with CKD and decongest PHCs and emergency care centers. Future studies should evaluate the impact of TN in the follow-up of patients screened with CKD, especially in stages 3-5, the decrease in travel-related CO2 emissions due to reduced displacement, the level of patient´s satisfaction/PHCs teams, and the evaluation effective cost of this care modality. ABSTRACT

The pandemic situation generated by COVID-19, chaotized the socio-educational processes of universities around the world. In the same way, these conditions influenced the socio-psychological manifestations of all the students of the Law career of the Universidad Regional AutOnoma de los Andes, in its headquarters in Puyo, Ecuador. These manifestations were studied from two perspectives, from the conceptual platform required and addressed in the research on resilience, and the virtuality of professional training identified in both synchronous and asynchronous activities. The action-research directed the study through qualitative methods and with the support of documentary-bibliographic inquiry as a container of the initial research principles. The existing relationship between the appreciations of the training from virtuality, the physical and socio-psychological conditions, and the influence of this on the resilient states were identified. All the above promoted recommendations of didactic actions to face the individual differences in the resilient processes faced by the students, from the position of guide and promoter of the teachers.
